I used to see a magazine as a bunch of articles. I read
every single words written there. I’ve never noticed the font the magazine use.
As long as it’s readable, I will read it.
But once, I am required to design a newsletter and it brings
me an obligation to pay attention to every single point of it, from cover to
articles to cover. I think Times New Roman doesn’t give any piece of
cake for the cover of the article. I think any font doesn’t have any big
matter. But, a visual communication design friend of mine, warn me of this, “I
recommend you an Arial or Calibri for the cover. It’s strong,
elegant, it has no tail or line upside the character. Times New Roman or
Minion is suitable for the text in the article because it has tail.”
Bang. Then I notice. It truely is.
Then he asks me, “Why do you italic this word? What does
this mean?”
I take a breath for a while, thinking, “Nothing, just to
make it seen not really nothing,” I answered.
“Then just un-italic it. You have to have reason for every
single bold, italic, or different colour you use.”
I said thank you and grab some magazines to my room. I used
to spend hours to read the text. But now, since I haven’t finished my design-newsletter-task,
I take the magazine to read the design. I think this is what my lecturer wants
me to do.
Thanks to my lecturer and my visual communication design
friend.
Now, I have a new glasses to read a magazine. The old and mainstream
one to read the text, the new one to read the design.
